NOTICE: We’re in the process of migrating the NGEE-Tropics Data Archive to ESS-DIVE, the long-term data archive for BER/ESS. All public NGEE-Tropics datasets can be accessed in the new NGEE-Tropics Portal in ESS-DIVE, including after the NGEE-Tropics Data Archive is retired.

Dataset Information

Site ID: PA-BCI; PA-PNM; PA-SLZ

Site Name: Barro Colorado Island (BCI); Parque Natural Metropolitano; Bosque Protector San Lorenzo (Fort Sherman)

Variables: Sapflow

Date Range: Jan. 1, 2022 - Dec. 31, 2022

Description: Sap flow was monitored at three Panamanian sites: Parque Natural Metropolitano (PNM), Barro Colorado Island (BCI), and Bosque Protector San Lorenzo (SLZ), using a total of 54 G-20mm sap flow sensors. Raw output from the data logger connected to 54 sap flow sensors are converted from xxx.dat. to xxx.csv. files. The metadata file (E-field log_v1-1_PNM_BCI_SLZ_sapflow_2022.xls) has information on locations where the sensors were installed, and other installation/maintenance details. No data processing or QA/QC was done on the raw datasets except conversion of dat. files to csv. files. Processed datasets have been uploaded separately. Methods Description: The raw data collected from sap flow sensors were preprocessed in R so that the data can be read by Baseliner software. The preprocessing mainly includes matching time steps of sap flow data, which is 5 min interval, whereas the met data was of 15 min interval. To match the interval, we repeated the same value of met data three times corresponding every 5 min. After time stamp matching, we prepared a data file that is readable by the baseliner software. In baseliner, we removed any irregular data points which were associated with malfunctioning of the sap flow sensors. After cleaning in baseliner, we export the data and processed again in R to get the sap flux density. We used Garnier equation to convert raw sap flow data to sap flux density (Granier 1987). In the processed data files, sap flow data from two sensors installed at the same tree were averaged to get final data value for each tree. Each tree represents a different species in all three sites.
