Dataset Information

Site ID: BR-Ma2

Site Name: Manaus - ZF2 K34

Variables: Leaf chemistry; Leaf gas exchange; Leaf mass area; Non structural carbohydrates (NSC)

Date Range: Jan. 30, 2019 - Nov. 6, 2019

Description: This data package contains raw light response curves of mature leaves from 26 individuals, distributed among 18 species with different canopy positions, and leaf traits (LMA, N, P, and NSC) from Manaus-Brazil (June-November 2019). Branches were cut from the tree and re-cut under water. All measurements were made using (Li-6400XT, Li-Cor®, Lincoln, USA) under standard environmental conditions. Also, have data from an experiment with 13CO2 using a combined method with Licor 6400XT and Picarro. The experiment was conducted with one tropical species and measured the concentration of ¹³CO2 and ¹²CO2 to estimate rates of leaf respiration. All the files included in this data package are in .csv format with additional metadata spreadsheets in Excel file formats.

QA/QC: None

Methods Description: This field data was collected at the Tropical Silviculture Experimental Station 60km NW of Manaus, Brazil. Sample vegetation was used from a plot installed near the site in 1996, composed of Dense Tropical Rainforest “Terra Firme”. 26 tree species were sampled in this area, with branches being cut from Understory, Lower Canopy and Canopy groups in order to evaluate certain methods, calculate leaf respiration rates, and to determine if canopy position influences leaf respiration rates and light suppression. The Kok method was used to determine if leaves were Rdark or Rlight based on leaf traits. Gas exchange measurements were calculated by putting sample branches in water to restore hydraulic conductivity and leaf gas exchange measurements were conducted using a gas chamber that regulated air flow and kept leaf temperature at 31 degrees C. The respiratory CO2 flux of the leaves was measured using a portable photosynthesis system. Leaves were put in a system that measured IRGAs when the leaf was exposed to constant light or constant darkness.
