This data package contains details of leaves sampled for leaf water potential and gas exchange measurements from the Bosque Protector San Lorenzo (PA-SLZ) NGEE Tropics site in Panama during February of 2017. The sunlit canopy leaves of Apeiba membranacea (APEIME), Guatteria dumetorum (GUATDU), Miconia borealis (MICOBO), Terminalia amazonia (TERMAM), Virola multiflora (VIROSP) and Vochysia ferruginea (VOCHFE) species were collected before dawn and around midday. Data for each sample includes species, age, sample number and a photograph. Within the attached zip file are three Excel files, two containing metadata and a single file with leaf sample data "2017_SLZ_LeafSamples_ByAgeV4.xlsx." Leaf sample photographs are included in "2017_SLZ_LeafSample_PhotosV2.zip". The leaf sampling protocol is described in "NGEE_Tropics_BNL_Leaf_Sample_Protocol.pdf." This data was collected as part of the 2017 BNL–STRI leaf traits by age campaign. See related datasets for leaf water potential, leaf spectra, sap flow, LMA, gas exchange and leaf chemistry. Note that this data packages was updated in May, 2021. The original data package was missing sample photographs. This has been corrected in NGT0045_2017_SLZ_LeafSamples_ByAgeV4.zip.
Leaf samples were collected before dawn and around midday. Data collection protocol can be found in the attached file "NGEE_Tropics_BNL_Leaf_Sample_Protocol" which is included in both Word document and PDF format. Data was cross referenced against related datasets to ensure accuracy of species and leaf age.
